The Red Sox have called up left-hander Fabio Castro from Triple-A Pawtucket.

To make room for the southpaw, the team optioned Scott Atchison to the PawSox. The move was necessitated after Boston used six relievers in Monday's 13-12 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Castro, who was the scheduled starter for the PawSox on Tuesday, can give
the team extended innings out of the bullpen if required. While his
8.10 ERA over three starts is not promising, he did whiff 13 in 10
innings

The 25-year-old has been with five organizations, including Toronto last year when he made 29 starts in the minors.
He was selected in the Rule 5 draft back in 2005, being selected from
the Chicago White Sox by the Texas Rangers. After just 8 1/3 innings
for Texas, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. He remained in
Philadelphia until September of 2008 when he was sent to Toronto for Matt Stairs.

It is unlikely Castro sticks for any length of time as Alan Embree is likely to join the team in the coming days.
