The Red Sox designated pitcher Boof Bonser for assignment on Friday and called up 22-year-old Felix Doubront, who will start the first game of the team’s three-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bonser, who spent the first two months of the season on the disabled list, pitched in only two games for the Red Sox. He had shoulder surgery in February 2009 and suffered a groin injury this season.

In two innings out of the bullpen this season, Bonser allowed four runs on six hits. In his career, the 28-year-old right-hander is 18-25 with a 5.19 ERA.

According to Boston.com, with Bonser designated for assignment, the Red Sox will keep left-hander Dustin Richardson and right-hander Scott Atchison in the majors.
