The Red Sox discussed trading reliever Ramon Ramirez to the Mets in exchange for catcher Rod Barajas, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. WEEI.com confirmed the report later on Monday.

The catching situation was not a good one for the Red Sox after Victor Martinez broke his thumb in June. He returned to the lineup on Monday night in Anaheim, but with Jason Varitek still sidelined with a broken foot, the team is still thin at the position.

Barajas, 34, was placed on the disabled list on Monday with an oblique injury. The veteran is batting .228 with 12 homers and 34 RBIs at the bottom of the Mets' lineup.

A source told WEEI that other deals involving Ramirez were discussed with the Mets, but that they were "probably not going to happen at this point."

After a solid first season in Boston in 2009, Ramirez has struggled to an 0-3 record and a 4.69 ERA in 2010.

Ramirez is part of a Red Sox bullpen that ranks 24th in the majors with a 4.44 ERA. The Mets rank ninth with a 3.44 ERA.
