The New England Patriots practice schedule for Wednesday has changed to a single-session workout from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Patriots kicked off training camp with six consecutive days of double-sessions, which is one shy of the way they opened camp in 2009. By giving the players a break Wednesday, it might be a good indication that Bill Belichick and the coaching staff are pleased with the team's progress in the first week.

"We decided to back off practice this morning, and [it will] give us a little time to catch up on film and some meetings, clean up a few things," Belichick said. "I feel like the players are working hard, and we've had a lot of contact. We felt like this was probably the best thing we could do for our team this morning."

The Pats will return to double-sessions on Thursday, with the first practice beginning at 9:30 a.m. There will also be free skin cancer screenings from  9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the W3 lobby of Gillette Stadium on Thursday.

Belichick also announced the Patriots have released rookie tackle John Wise, who was a collegiate wrestler, and signed guard Eric Ghiaciuc.
