'The Fighter' Star Melissa Leo Channels Her Inner Lowell by Dropping F-Bomb at Oscars Lowell, Mass., is a city with character. It's filled with charming folks of all types, and if you walk around on a Friday night, you just might overhear a swear or two in passing.

So it was only fitting on Sunday night that Melissa Leo, who played Micky Ward's mother in The Fighter, dropped an F-bomb at the Academy Awards in front of thousands in attendance and millions watching on TV.

"When I watched Kate [Winslet] two years ago, it looked so [F-bomb] easy," Leo said, though the swear was edited out on the delayed broadcast.

Part of what made the swear so funny was that it came just a few seconds after she said, "Golly sakes!"

She later apologized in her news conference backstage, where she explained the type of language she picked up while shooting the film.

"A lot of what makes The Fighter such an incredible film is that we were there in Lowell, with the actual people," she said. "We were right there in the town, hearing the gossip and hearing the language and the dialect and all of that."

Safe to say she pretty much nailed it — both in the film and on Sunday night.
