Vote: Which Side Are You on in the NFL Labor Negotiations? Thursday’s original deadline for a new collective bargaining agreement has come and gone, and while there has been no resolution, the two sides have mercifully decided to continue talking for another week — a sign that avoiding a lockout may really be possible.

Still, both sides have been pretty underhanded in how they’ve handled the process. The owners tried to put aside billions of dollars in television revenue as a nest egg that would support them for a two-year lockout. Likewise, the players were accused of not negotiating in good faith, with their ultimate intention being to decertify and sue the owners individually.

Dirty tactics aside, the greater question is which side is being greedier? The owners, mostly already billionaires, are looking to increase their profits in what is already a highly profitable business, both by taking a larger share of revenue and by adding two games to the season.

Still, they do have some legitimate reasons for such. They have spent huge sums of money on new stadiums with little reimbursement, and the players have consistently cut into their share of revenue over the years to a worrisome extent.

Given a potentially longer season, the players are looking for more money themselves, as well as an expanded package of benefits.

As for the third party in the process, the fans, they just want football.
