The UMass football program will join the Mid-American Conference in time for the 2012 season, according to sources.

UMass and the MAC will officially announce the move Wednesday afternoon during a press conference at Gillette Stadium, which will host more of UMass' home games in the future.

It's a move up for UMass, which is currently in the Colonial Athletic Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA). The MAC is part of the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A).

UMass will be eligible for the MAC championship and bowl games in 2013.
