After three seasons behind the Providence bench as the assistant coach, Bruce Cassidy is taking over as the team's head coach.

Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli announced on Saturday that Cassidy will replace Rob Murray as head coach of the Providence Bruins, making him the 10th head coach in team history.

During Cassidy's three seasons as the team's assistant, Boston's AHL affiliate compiled a 117-103-10-10 record.

He coached the Washington Capitals in 2002-03, a season in which they advanced to the playoffs before being eliminated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round. In addition to the NHL and AHL, Cassidy has coached in the ECHL, IHL and OHL.

Cassidy, 46, was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks with the 18th pick of the 1983 NHL draft, and appeared in 36 NHL games between 1985 and 1990. He also played in the Italian Ice Hockey League and the German Hockey League.
