Jason Bay's fourth-inning shot stayed inside the left field foul pole to give the Mets their first grand slam in 299 games. The Mets could only shake their heads when Carlos Beltran hit a grand slam the very next inning.
It took them nearly two years to hit one grand slam, and suddenly they had two in the span of an inning.
"Sometimes in this game, there's things that take a while to happen," Beltran said. "[Tuesday] we were able to hit two. No explanation for it."
Before Bay's drive, the last Met to hit a grand slam was Angel Pagan on Aug. 1, 2009.
The two salamis came as part of the Mets' 14-3 rout of the Detroit Tigers. Whereas the grand slam slump was more peculiar, the victory brought an end to a more significant slump — it put the Mets above .500 for the first time since early April, when they were 3-2.
