When it comes to Braves third baseman Chipper Jones, a trip to the disabled list sometimes seems to be more of a matter of "when" than "if."

After playing the past two months with a torn meniscus in his right knee, Jones landed himself back on the DL on Saturday. The seven-time All-Star returned to Atlanta, where he underwent arthroscopic surgery, according to MLB.com.

"I just didn't want to play through it all summer and have something go wrong in September and have to miss the playoffs," Jones said via a text message. "It's killing me to hit right-handed, so we decided to play [Friday] night, then get it done today."

Jones, who turned 39 in April, will not attend Tuesday's MLB All-Star Game in Phoenix. The Braves recalled infielder Brandon Hicks to take his place on the roster.
