Andy Pettitte‘s decision to retire from baseball didn’t last long. The left-handed pitcher signed a contract with the Yankees on Friday, announcing his return to New York and the game he loves.

Pettitte said he’s been thinking about a comeback for a while now, but he didn’t think the opportunity would be there. A sign of interest from the Yankees front office certainly got Pettitte’s attention, though, even if the information came through an unusual circumstance.

The 39-year-old lefty was doing a seemingly normal interview with a reporter when the information of possible Yankee interest came about. Pettitte was stunned by the information and began talks with Yankees GM Brian Cashman about a possible return, just a few days later.

Cashman said in an interview with YES that Pettitte began working towards pitching again and that the opportunity for Andy to rejoin the Yankees was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

Pettitte’s journey back to prominence in the big leagues may be a longer one than most Yankee fans would hope, but he certainly isn’t shying away from the challenge.

“I’m excited to come back, and I’m looking forward to the challenge of doing it,” Pettitte said in an interview with YES on Friday.

Cashman seemed excited for Pettitte’s return as well, telling YES, “We have plenty of good pitchershere, but there’s very few guys who could be Andy Pettitte.”
