Once United's final game of the season — a 2-0 win at Sunderland — was over, it looked as though Rooney and company had defended their league title. Manchester City was tied 2-2 with Queens Park Rangers in extra time. But Sergio Aguero scored that famous goal, and the home fans at the Stadium of Light went berserk. Some even celebrated by taunting United players and fans with the "Poznan" celebration that City's fans have made famous in England.
"When the final whistle went, we didn't really know what the score at City was. But then we heard the Sunderland fans cheering," Rooney said.
The PFA Player of the Year nominee then went on the attack. He chided the Mackems' fans for supporting another team (if only for a moment), and mocked Sunderland's 13th placed finish.
"It was sad to see that because they should be supporting their own team really," Rooney said. "'They didn't have the best of seasons so for them to be cheering like that was sad. It was something myself and a lot of the players won't forget."
For much of his career, Rooney was fueld by passion that often boiled over into rage. The 26-year-old has mellowed over the years, as his improving disciplinary record suggests, but one gets the feeling that the old (young) Rooney will be on display when United returns to the Stadium of Light next season.
