Football usually tries to play through the elements — both the American and European versions.

On Friday, the UEFA Euro 2012 version decided that they had to break tradition.

Officials suspended the game between Ukraine and France five minutes in after rain and lightning made the field unplayable.

It’s an unusual move, but a necessary one given that the weather was clearly a factor.

Play resumed right around 1 p.m. EST with the two teams scoreless.
