Fredette entered an agreement with Black Clover Enterprises in March 2012 to use his name and likeness on products. Fredette was to earn $50,000 per year, plus royalties of up to 10 percent of company revenues on endorsed products. Fredette had to make a two-hour appearance at the company, wear Black Clover’s products at media events, promote the apparel through social media and provide autographs to the Utah company. Fredette’s lawyer, Tyson Snow, said the former BYU guard has lived up to his end of the bargain.
The company sells Fredette hats in Kings colors. Black Clover’s owner, Brett Wayment said the company hopes to resolve the issue with Fredette.
“We like Jimmer and his family … and want to keep the relationship healthy,” Wayment said, according to the Associated Press.
It’s appropriate that Fredette is back in the headlines while the NCAA tournament is reaching its apex. Fredette first made his name during March Madness in consecutive years when he led BYU to the Sweet 16. The Cougars lost to Kansas State in 2010 and Florida in 2011.
Perhaps Black Clover is unable to pay Fredette because the guard isn’t quite the star that they thought they were signing back in March 2012. It also may not help that the Black Clover Fredette hats are (how do we say this nicely?) ugly.
Fredette is averaging seven points per game in his second season in the NBA with 1.3 assists. Fredette could soon be playing for the Seattle Sonics if Sacramento is unable to keep their Kings.
