ESPN is reporting that Smith and the Buccaneers have agreed to a four-year contract.
Tampa Bay fired Greg Schiano on Monday after the former Rutgers man went 11-21 with a pair of last-place finishes in the NFC South division in two seasons as the head coach.
Smith brings a lot of experience to a Buccaneers roster that features several talented young players. The 55-year-old’s most recent coaching gig was with the Chicago Bears, whom he led to the playoffs three times in nine seasons, including a Super Bowl appearance in 2006 and an NFC Championship Game berth in 2010. He was fired by the Bears after the 2012 season.
Smith has a career head coaching record of 81-63 with five winning seasons.
