Report: UMass Football, Sun Belt Conference In ‘Very Preliminary’ Talks

mark whippleThe University of Massachusetts football program reportedly has begun its search for a new home.

UMass, which will depart the Mid-American Conference after the 2015 season, has engaged in “very preliminary” discussions about potentially joining the Sun Belt Conference as a football-only member, Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson told on Wednesday.

The Minutemen are entering their first season under new head coach Mark Whipple after going 2-22 in two years under Charley Molnar since moving up to the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision. They will open the 2014 campaign with games against four power-conference opponents: Boston College, Colorado, Vanderbilt and Penn State.

Should UMass join the Sun Belt, it would become by far the northeastern-most school in a conference, which recently added Idaho, New Mexico State and former Football Championship Subdivision powers Georgia Southern and Appalachian State to bring its membership to 11.
