brandon marshallBrandon Marshall’s mother was “honored” after his son came to her defense on Twitter and offered a Detroit Lions fan $25,000 to get into the ring with him. But the wide receiver’s employer felt a bit differently about the back-and-forth on the social media website.

The Bears wideout’s mom, Diane, told TMZ Sports recently she thought Marshall’s offer was “very sweet” of her son.

“I am honored that my son wanted to have a duel on his mother’s behalf,” Brandon’s mother Diane said. “I think this is Brandon’s way of getting the guy’s attention.”

However, Bears general manager Phil Emery told his star player to, “Read (his) contract.”

“We talk to our guys about it,” head coach Marc Trestman said, according to ESPN.com. “We don’t police everything that they do. We ask them to take a deep breath before they press that send button. Hopefully they make decisions that are in the best interest of their team.”

Meanwhile, Marshall defended his actions saying that it was a way to raise money to combat bullying.

“I want to blow this thing even bigger,” Marshall said. “I want to launch a campaign of anti-bullying. We’re going to have a nice ring. We’re going to have it at my gym. We’re going to get some gloves. We’re going to try to get maybe Showtime to come out, produce it, and try to raise a lot of money for anti-bullying because that’s where the world is going right now with Twitter and Instagram.”

Marshall said he wants to make people accountable for their behavior on social media and doesn’t want people “hiding behind their words.”
