Carson PalmerCarson Palmer doesn’t often show much emotion, but he couldn’t help himself Sunday.

The Arizona Cardinals quarterback — just days after signing a new contract extension — tore his ACL during the Cardinals’ eventual win over the St. Louis Rams. The Cardinals confirmed those reports Monday, saying that Palmer will be lost for the season with the injury.

Palmer, who suffered a gruesome injury in the same knee in 2006, said he knew right away his season was over.

“I didn’t need an MRI or an X-ray,” he said, according to The Associated Press. “I felt a pop so I knew it was my last time on the field this year.”

Still, the entire situation drove Palmer to tears.

“It’s not easy,” Palmer.”I’m not going to lie. I cried like a baby last night and I’m not an emotional guy. The last time I cried like this was when I lost my friend and (Cincinnati Bengals) teammate Chris Henry back in (2009).”

Palmer and the Cardinals are in the middle of one of their best seasons in recent memory. Palmer’s 95.6 passer rating was his highest since 2005, and the Cardinals were 6-0 with him under center. Palmer completed 62.9 percent of his passes and was averaging 271 passing yards per game.

Backup Drew Stanton entered the game Sunday after Palmer and led the Cardinals to a win. Arizona sits atop the NFC West with an 8-1 record.
