For many, Thanksgiving is a joyous holiday spent with friends and family around an endless bounty of food. For a certain aviary species, though, it’s a nightmare come true.

No one knows this more than the Hokie, the turkey-like mascot of Virginia Tech’s athletic teams, who watches hundreds of thousands of his brethren get placed on the Thanksgiving table every year.

This season, the Hokie decided to take matters into his own hands. With the the help of Virginia Tech’s sports nutrition program, the furry mascot starred in a moving public service announcement urging America to “Save the Turkeys.”

Some extra searching reveals that the term “Hokie” actually has nothing to do with a turkey and instead refers to a fight song that originated in the late 1800s.

But for the sake of the poor mascot — who looks pretty darn sad in this video — you might want to think twice before reaching for that drumstick on Thanksgiving.
