Don Sweeney’s first move as the new general manager of the Boston Bruins is the signing of Finnish forward Joonas Kemppainen to a one-year, two-way contract.

The deal, which the Bruins announced Thursday, includes a $700,000 NHL salary cap hit.

The 27-year-old center could fill a bottom-six role for the Bruins during the 2015-16 campaign. He tallied 32 points (11 goals, 21 assists) in 59 games for Oulun Kärpät of SM-liiga (Finnish Elite League) this season, including 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists) in 19 playoff games.

Kemppainen also posted nine points (three goals, six assists) in eight games for Finland at the 2015 IIHF World Championships.

He should be a good fit with the Boston or Providence Bruins as a strong, offensively gifted forward at 6-foot-2, 213 pounds.
