Maybe Gregory Polanco was doing his best wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man impersonation. Or maybe he was channeling his inner Elaine Benes.

Either way, Polanco’s mishap Friday on the final play of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ walk-off loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field was a sight to behold.

Matt Szczur lifted a fly ball to right field in the bottom of the 12th inning with the bases loaded, one out and the score tied 10-10. It looked like a routine out on a ball not hit deep enough to plate the tying run via a sacrifice fly. Polanco’s legs instantly turned to spaghetti, though, and he tumbled to the ground as Starlin Castro trotted home with Chicago’s game-winning run.

The Pirates had rallied from down 7-1 to eventually tie the game in the ninth inning. Unfortunately for the Bucs, the effort went for naught because of a goofy ending, to say the least.

Hopefully, Polanco will be able to have a good laugh about the play before long. We sure will.
