It didn’t take long for the New England Patriots to fill Brandon Spikes’ old roster spot.

The Patriots signed cornerback Derek Cox on Monday, putting their offseason roster back at 90 players, the team announced.

Cox began his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being selected in the third round of the 2009 NFL draft. He spent four years with the Jaguars before signing with the San Diego Chargers in 2013. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound William & Mary product was out of football last season.

Cox has started 56 career games in five seasons with 13 interceptions and 241 tackles. He started the first 11 games of the 2013 season for the Chargers before getting benched in the final five games.

Cox will compete for a roster spot with fellow Patriots cornerbacks Malcolm Butler, Bradley Fletcher, Logan Ryan, Robert McClain, Justin Green, Jimmy Jean, Eric Patterson, Daxton Swanson and Darryl Roberts.

The Jaguars traded their 2010 second-round draft pick and a 2009 seventh-rounder to the Patriots to select Cox in the 2009 draft. The Patriots selected wide receiver Julian Edelman with the seventh-round pick and traded the second rounder to move up in the 2010 draft to take tight end Rob Gronkowski.
