Let’s get this out of the way first: John Oliver’s new show has been pretty awesome.

The British comedian recently ditched Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” to start his new show on HBO, “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver.” He’s humorously tackled some controversial issues — including the FIFA scandal — and recently set his sights on transgender rights.

Oliver’s bit didn’t disappoint, but in making his point, the self-professed New York sports fan couldn’t resist taking a shot at Boston sports. (Skip to 4:15 to hear the dig.)

The jab in question: “One study estimates that nearly 700,000 American adults are transgender. That’s more than the population of Boston, and you probably know someone from Boston. I’ll give you a clue, it was the guy who wore a Bruins jersey to your sister’s wedding.”

Now, one could interpret that as a shot at Boston sports fans, but it really just proves we’re passionate about our teams and will wear Boston Bruins jerseys to our sisters’ weddings whenever we darn well please. Or something like that.

The full clip is worth a watch, as Oliver points out some uncomfortable truths about how America reacts to transgender people and also offers his take on Caitlyn Jenner’s recent transformation.

So just ignore that little jab for now, Boston sports fans. Besides, Oliver’s favorite teams are the New York Mets and New York Jets, so he’s harmless.
