Christian Vazquez Overcomes Brief Elbow Scare At Red Sox Spring Training

Christian Vazquez definitely is breathing a sigh of relief.

Vazquez, who missed the entire 2015 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, told WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford on Monday that he experienced some discomfort in his surgically repaired elbow a few days ago at spring training in Fort Myers, Fla. It was a startling experience for the Boston Red Sox catcher, though he quickly learned the issue wasn’t anything serious.

“Last week I felt something, but it’€™s muscle,” Vazquez told Bradford. “It was the first time I felt something. It was a little scary because it was the first time I had been sore since after the surgery. I called quick to the trainer. But it’€™s normal.

“They said it wasn’€™t a problem. They said it was muscle and scar tissue. That’€™s part of the rehab. But I’€™m doing good.”

The Red Sox are proceeding cautiously with Vazquez despite the 25-year-old’s insistence that he’s ready to go. Blake Swihart is penciled in as Boston’s starting catcher and Ryan Hanigan figures to serve as the backup, but Vazquez could force his way into the picture before long. There’s no denying Vazquez’s talent and leadership, both of which were on display during his first big league call-up in 2014.

It’s unclear at this point whether Vazquez will be ready for game action when the Red Sox kick off their spring training exhibition slate next week. The important thing, of course, is that Vazquez continues to trend in the right direction from a health standpoint. So far, he’s doing well in spite of his recent setback. According to Bradford, Vazquez has resumed throwing to bases without any issues.

“I feel healthy, strong,” Vazquez said. “No pain and I’m feeling good. I’m hoping I can do it in games. (Games) are going to be the test. See what happens.”

Crisis averted.
