NFL Free Agency Rumors: Packers Interested In Running Back Matt Forte

Matt Forte has been one of the NFL’s most productive running backs in the last five or so seasons, and he should draw plenty of interest from some of the league’s best teams when free agency begins Wednesday.

One of those teams is the Green Bay Packers, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday.

The Packers had a decent rushing attack last season, ranking in the top 15 in both rushing yards per game and yards per carry. Starting running back Eddie Lacy started the 2015 campaign slowly, but he was pretty good in the second half.

Still, Forte would be an upgrade over Lacy, James Starks and all the other Green Bay running backs from last season.

The former Chicago Bears running back racked up more than 1,000 total yards and seven total touchdowns last season. It was a disappointing year, by his standards, but the Bears as a team struggled to find much consistency. Forte also missed three games because of an injury, which allowed backup Jeremy Langford to step in and take away some carries.

Forte has five 1,000-yard seasons as a rusher and six campaigns with 50 or more receptions since the Bears drafted him in 2008. He led all running backs with 102 catches in 2014.
