Wes Welker Hasn’t Spoken To Bill Belichick Since Leaving Patriots In 2013

Wes Welker reportedly did not have the best relationship with Patriots coach Bill Belichick during his time in New England. And since Welker left, the two apparently haven’t had a relationship of any sort.

Welker said Tuesday on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Toucher & Rich” that he has not spoken to Belichick since he left the Patriots to sign with the Denver Broncos in March 2013.

“Shoot,” the wide receiver said. “Spoke with him? Probably right before I signed with Denver, probably.”

Welker said he contacts Patriots owner Robert Kraft “every once in a while” but hasn’t felt the desire to reconnect with Belichick, who coached him for six seasons.

“Not really,” Welker said. “I mean, I don’t know. If something came up, I don’t feel like I couldn’t (reach out to Belichick). … (But) I don’t see any reason to.”

Ravaged by concussions over the three seasons since he left New England, Welker now is mulling a coaching career of his own. The 35-year-old completed stints as a guest coach with the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens earlier this summer, and while he’s unsure whether he’s willing to commit to the grueling schedule that comes along with that profession, he’s on the lookout for something to occupy his newfound free time.

“That’s a great question,” Welker, who played in eight games for the St. Louis Rams last season, said when asked if he considers his playing career over. “If the right opportunity came up …

“One thing I learned going through the first half of the year where I wasn’t playing is that I would like to do something. Golfing three or four times a week is just — there’s still three or four days there where you’re sitting there like, ‘OK, what do I do besides hang out with the kids and wife?’ And that’s great and everything, but you just want a place to go and a place to have a routine.”

UPDATE (4:13 p.m. ET): According to the Providence Journal’s Mark Daniels, Welker wished to revise the statements he made Tuesday morning. He told Daniels he actually has had contact with Belichick in the three years since his departure from Foxboro.
