Martin Perez is taking the good with the bad from Sunday’s start.
The lefty went 3 2/3 innings in the second game of the Boston Red Sox’s doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox. He gave up four earned runs off seven hits and was credited with the loss.
But the pitcher was not entirely discouraged by his outing. In fact, he pulled some positives out of it given the circumstances of a shortened, seven-inning game.
“With the game with seven innings, you just got to go out there and attack the hitters, you know? I think I always stayed on the attack, but like I said, too many bloopers,” Perez told reporters during his postgame media availability after the 5-1 loss. “Alex (Cora) brought me out of the game because he was trying to hold the game and we can’t hit but that happens and I’m OK with the decision he made; he’s the manager.”
The Red Sox manager himself also mentioned postgame that he was happy with the amount of strikes Perez threw, and that the defense could have played better behind him. Of course, run support also helps.
But Perez also is content with 41 of his 58 pitches being thrown for strike.
“Yeah, I was able to throw a lot of breaking balls and feel good with that pitch, and, you know, I think I throw a lot of strikes,” Perez said. “I walked nobody so that’s big for me. and, and, like I say he turned me on not because I was not throwing strikes. He just take me out because of the situation of the game.”
