Red Sox, Paul Byrd Fly Into Windy City Series With White Sox The Red Sox escaped Tampa Bay with a win Thursday, extending their lead in the wild- card race over the Rangers, who were off, to three games, and over the Rays to six games. The Red Sox are likely to put Tropicana Field in their rearview mirror. It was their first series win there since 2007. Clay Buchholz picked up his first win of the season against a team other than the Blue Jays.

RHP Paul Byrd (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. RHP Freddy Garcia (0-2, 5.94)

Byrd dazzled the Blue Jays on Aug. 30 at Fenway in his first start since Sept. 24, 2008. In six scoreless innings, the veteran right-hander allowed just three hits and three walks with one strikeout. 

In 15 career starts against the White Sox, Byrd is 8-3 with a 4.43 ERA (50 earned runs in 101 2/3 innings). In six starts in Chicago, he is 4-1 with a 4.31 ERA (19 earned runs in 39 2/3 innings). In his last seven outings against the White Sox since 2007, he is 3-1 with a 3.43 ERA (15 earned runs, 39 1/3 innings), going at least six innings in five of those seven games with four quality starts.

This is Garcia’s fourth start of the season and second against the Red Sox. He has posted quality starts in his last two outings, including his last start against the Red Sox on Aug. 25 at Fenway. He did not get a decision, allowing three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. At Yankee Stadium on Aug. 30, Garcia gave up three runs in six innings and took the loss. The White Sox are 0-3 in his starts this season. 

In 14 career starts against the Red Sox, Garcia is 6-2 with a 4.74 ERA (46 earned runs, 87 1/3 innings).  In his last six starts against the Red Sox, he is 3-0 with a 5.31 ERA (25 earned runs, 42 1/3 innings).

Jed Lowrie has been on the DL since Aug. 7 with ulnar neuritis of the left wrist.

Right-hander Bartolo Colon is on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation.

The White Sox barely put up a challenge for the Red Sox at Fenway last week. It will be interesting to see if Paul Byrd can duplicate the stellar performance he threw at the Blue Jays in his last start. Taking two of three from the Rays at the Trop should give the Sox good road momentum heading into Chicago.
