Saturday just wasn't San Jose's day. And it certainly wasn't Marc-Edouard Vlasic's day.
The Sharks fell 3-0 to the Blues in Game 2 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series, but they should've known they were in for a long night after the way St. Louis got on the board.
Less than two minutes into the game, Blues forward Vladimir Sobotka threw a shot on net that was initially stopped by San Jose netminder Antii Niemi. The puck then trickled away in the crease, though, meaning a Sharks defender would need to sweep it away to avoid disaster.
That was too much for Vlasic to handle.
Rather than sweeping it out of the crease and keeping the game scoreless early, the Sharks defenseman put the puck into his own net, giving St. Louis an early 1-0 edge and handing the Blues all the momentum in the world.
Check out the bizarre play in the video below, and ask yourself, "What was he thinking?" Let me know if you have an answer.
