The 49ers rode Colin Kaepernick‘s right arm to within a few yards of a Super Bowl title last season, but now head coach Jim Harbaugh is worried that arm might be getting a little too big.
Soon after their Super Bowl loss, Kaepernick fled to CES Performance in Atlanta to begin his offseason regimen and begin preparing for the 2013 NFL season. But Kaepernick’s plan included a lot of time in the weight room, which had Harbaugh concerned about him getting too big or too strong, according to CSN Bay Area.
“If you’re just talking about weightlifting and upper-body strength,” Harbaugh said. “Yes, I think there is that fear.”
Athletes are often urged to hit the weight room by coaches and trainers in order to get bigger and faster out on the field. In this case, though, Kaepernick doesn’t really need to get much stronger. He’s known to have one of the strongest arms in the NFL, and some of his receivers were even known to prefer catching passes from other quarterbacks during practice.
Harbaugh doesn’t want to keep his quarterback from becoming a better player, but he did give Kaepernick a bit of a directive about his training.
“It’s something we’ve talked about,” Harbaugh added. “‘I don’t want you getting too jacked-up, Colin.’ I want some speed, quickness, not just [flexing chest his muscles].”
Getting some bigger biceps might be a priority for Kaepernick, given his “Kaepernicking” celebration does involve a kiss of the so-called guns. After all he does have a financial interest in keeping the trendy celebration alive.
