Editor’s note: NESN.com is holding a three-week tournament to determine “Boston’s Best Newcomer.” The Red Sox added a lot of new faces in 2013, and the results have been impressive. It’s time to determine which new addition from 2013 best embodies Boston baseball.
Ryan Dempster‘s numbers don’t jump off the page. But the 36-year-old has given the Red Sox exactly what they expected.
Dempster might not be a lights-out presence in the Red Sox’ rotation, but he has given them quality innings throughout the entire season. While that doesn’t sound all that impressive, it’s an important ingredient to a successful pitching staff, and it’s one of the biggest reasons why signing the veteran to a two-year, $26.5 million was a priority during the offseason.
Dempster brought seven seasons with at least 200 innings pitched to Boston, and he has taken the ball every fifth day for much of 2013. You pretty much know what you’re going to get from him, and it’s good to have that peace of mind, especially as other parts move around throughout the season.
Dempster has also provided plenty of leadership and humor in a clubhouse built on chemistry. The 16-year-old veteran has seen a lot, and his teammates certainly respect that.
