California Chrome’s quest for the Triple Crown will continue.
The Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner received approval Monday to wear a nasal strip during next month’s Belmont Stakes, the New York Racing Association announced.
Trainer Art Sherman hinted Sunday that the horse might withdraw from the Belmont if race organizers did not allow the colt to wear the strip.
“I’d have to leave it up to the owners,” Sherman said, via The Associated Press. “I know they’ll be upset.”
Twelve horses have captured the sport’s Triple Crown, but none have done so since Affirmed in 1978. Since then, 12 have won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness but come up short at Belmont Park.
