Croatia ended Cameroon’s World Cup dreams with a dominant 4-0 victory Wednesday in Brazil.
Cameroon has been eliminated from contention and will miss the knockout stages for the fourth consecutive World Cup tournament. The African nation will play Group A leader and host nation Brazil on Monday.
Croatia needs a victory against Mexico on Monday to secure a spot in the Round of 16. A draw would not be enough for the Croatians because Mexico leads them by one point in the group standings.
Ivica Olic opened the scoring in Wednesday’s game 17 minutes into the first half. Cameroon went down to 10 men in the 41st minute when defensive midfielder Alex Song received a straight red card for elbowing Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic in the back. After Ivan Perisic gave Croatia a 2-0 advantage early in the second half, Mandzukic scored two goals 12 minutes apart to secure the win.
Cameroon’s attack struggled with just two shots on goal. This lack of offense can be attributed to veteran striker Samuel Eto’o missing the game because of a knee injury.
