Louis van Gaal and Ryan GiggsManchester United is trying to put things right.

After finishing in seventh place in last season’s Premier League, Manchester United has given new manager Louis van Gaal free rein to do what he thinks is necessary to bring the club back to the top.

Despite its recent on-field struggles, Manchester United remains a financial juggernaut. Van Gaal has gone on a spending spree for the ages, shelling out over £150 million ($243.4 million) — including a British record £59.7 million ($96.9 million) for Angel di Maria — on world-class players, future stars and cogs in a new machine. Van Gaal has made room for the new arrivals by clearing former regulars, such as Tom Cleverly and Danny Welbeck, out of the squad.

The results haven’t inspired confidence in Manchester United fans so far. The Red Devils have played four competitive games in 2014-15, winning none, drawing two and losing two.
