Bob WilsonLongtime Boston Bruins radio play-by-play announcer Bob Wilson passed away Thursday morning. He was 85.

Wilson died after a battle with lung cancer, and his loss has many members of the Bruins and Boston sports media communities reflecting on his life. The best indication of how much of an impact he had can be found right outside the Bruins radio booth at TD Garden, the Bob Wilson Radio Booth.

Wilson spent more than two decades behind the mic for Bruins radio broadcasts, doing both play-by-play and color analyst work. He retired in the mid-1990s and was honored by the team in 2011 when the radio booth was named after him.

“On behalf of the Boston Bruins organization, we are saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Wilson,” Bruins president Cam Neely said Saturday in a statement. “For a generation of New England hockey fans, Bob’s legendary voice was synonymous with the Bruins and he will always be a part of our club’s history. Our thoughts are with Nancy and their children during this difficult time.”

Current Bruins play-by-play voices — NESN’s Jack Edwards and 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Dave Goucher — each took to Twitter on Saturday to share their condolences and memories.
