Vince NeilThe national anthem was written as a battle song of memoriam. From the rocket’s red glare to the bombs bursting in air, Americans triumphed.

That’s partially why it’s played at sporting events — sort of the predecessor to jock jams. And it works: No one can say they’ve never been moved, pumped up or otherwise emotionally riled by a rendition of the national anthem at some point in their lives.

That’s why when somebody screws it up, America never lets them live it down.

Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil became the latest in a long line of terrible anthem singers Monday night, when he took the field before his Las Vegas Outlaws played their first Arena Football League game. You’ll want to see Neil’s version of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which one outlet called “strangely cavalier.”

Yeah, that’s one way to put it.
