Sabathia, Yankees Edge Tigers There haven’t been many pitchers duels at the new Yankee Stadium, but on Saturday, Yankees ace CC Sabathia was able to edge Justin Verlander and the Tigers in a rare low-scoring affair at the new ballpark.

The Yankees' big lefty pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just five hits and three walks while striking out four en route to the 2-1 win. Verlander ran into trouble in the seventh after cruising through the first six innings where he allowed no runs on just two hits.

Alex Rodriguez led off the seventh inning with a solo blast, his 18th of the season, off Verlander to give the Bronx Bombers the 1-0 lead. Later that inning, Melky Cabrera drove in Robinson Cano with an infield single for what would eventually be the game-winning run.

New York’s bullpen made it interesting in the eighth frame when Marcus Thames launched a solo shot off of Alfredo Aceves to bring the Tigers within one.

It was Sabathia’s third shutout performance as a member of the Yankees and his third win at the new ball yard. Also chipping in for the Yankees offense were Derek Jeter (two hits), Johnny Damon (double) and Nick Swisher (double). Mark Teixeira went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts and a walk in the Yankees’ second win in a row.
