The end of summer means going back to school — an unpleasant thought for most kids, unless you happen to be heading back to Boston Public Schools. In that case, the Red Sox Foundation is making things a little more exciting.

On Sunday, August 16, Red Sox Kid Nation and Hood are teaming up for "Middle O!", a city-wide orientation for all new Boston Public Schools sixth graders. The event, which takes place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Big Concourse at Fenway Park, is designed to provide an easy transition from elementary school to junior high.

"The transition from elementary to middle school is both an exciting and challenging time for most kids," said Meg Vaillancourt, Executive Director of the Red Sox Foundation. "The Red Sox are honored to partner with the corporate champions at Hood and Kid Nation to help ensure students in Boston and other communities in the New England area are prepared and can be successful."

The program aims to help kids as they make the often difficult transition into middle school by providing them with readiness tips. It will feature three hours of activities, such as self-guided tours of Fenway, a photo opportunity with Red Sox mascot Wally, games focused on school readiness, and a student panel with sixth grade alums. There will also be an opportunity to meet with principals from the area as well as Mayor Thomas M. Menino.

The Boston Public Schools serves over 56,000 pre-kindergarten through grade 12 students in 135 schools.
