The competition for roster spots among Patriots tight ends has been particularly tough this preseason. In fact, head coach Bill Belichick said on Sunday that it's the best race he's ever had.

But there is one less competitor as of Sunday, as the team released second-year tight end Tyson DeVree.

"We just felt that given what all the circumstances are and his particular situation that this is probably the right thing to do for him and the team," Belichick said.

The 6-foot-6, 245-pound DeVree was originally signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agent prior to the 2008 season. The Colorado alum was a member of the New England practice squad before being brought onto the 53-man roster. He played two games for the Patriots last year and made his first reception during the Pats' preseason win over the Eagles on Aug. 13.
