Peavy Suffers Setback, Will Be Examined By White Sox Doctors on Monday The Red Sox have the Daisuke Matsuzaka situation. The White Sox have the Jake Peavy situation.

The ace — who was acquired in arguably the largest trade deadline deal of 2009 — was supposed to make his first start for Chicago against New York on Saturday. That idea was scratched at the last minute, and instead, Peavy started for Triple-A Charlotte — but he only made it through 3 1/3 innings before leaving due to soreness in his elbow. He threw 68 pitches.

ESPN.com reports that Peavy will travel to Minnesota on Monday to meet the team and have his elbow evaluated. It is uncertain whether the setback is something Peavy can rebound from quickly or something that will require him to be shut down for the remainder of the season.

The two-time All-Star and 2007 Cy Young winner was traded to Chicago on July 31 in exchange for Clayton Richard, Aaron Poreda, Dexter Carter and Adam Russell. He has been on the disabled list since June 9 due to a strained tendon in his right ankle.

The White Sox' hopes of making a push for the AL Central title are dwindling; they are currently in third place in the division, five games behind the Tigers.
