Jerod Mayo Wants Junior Seau Wearing a Patriots Uniform With barely any recognizable faces remaining on a once-formidable Patriots defense, second-year linebacker Jerod Mayo has been faced with the difficult task of leading a very young group. But it's been hard for him to do that from a bench.

Mayo suffered an injury during the Patriots' season opener against Buffalo and hasn't played since. He — along with everyone else in Foxborough — knows the D could use some help, and he doesn't think there's anyone better suited for the job than Junior Seau.

"Just as far as being a leader, and a leadership role, he's a great guy," Mayo told The Boston Globe on Wednesday. "I had the opportunity to play with him last year and he really helped me learn the game."

Last year, the 40-year-old Seau returned to New England for the final four games of the regular season and led the Patriots to a 4-0 record in that span. Although he has retired three times before — once before the 2006 season, once after the 2007 season and again after the 2008 season — he is expected to sign with the Patriots next week, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Although Mayo participated in practice on Wednesday, he did not discuss whether or not he plans to play when the Patriots visit Josh McDaniels and the Broncos on Sunday. He is still recovering from a sprained MCL suffered in the first quarter of the Patriots' win over the Bills.
