UConn football star Jasper Howard has died from a stabbing incident that took place early Sunday morning on the Storrs campus.
Howard, a 5-foot-9, 174-pound Miami native, was taken to St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the Hartford Courant.
The starting cornerback was involved in an altercation shortly after midnight following a fire alarm at an on-campus dance that hosted both students and non-students at the Student Union. The alarm prompted approximately 300 people to evacuate the building and into the streets where an argument inside resulted in the stabbing, according to UConn police.
Two more stab victims reportedly were taken to Windham Community Memorial Hospital.
Head coach Randy Edsall, who spent the night at St. Francis, was not available for comment.
The 20-year-old junior had a career-high 11 tackles while forcing and recovering a fumble in UConn's 38-25 win over Louisville on Saturday. In 2008, he started all 13 games and notched 60 total tackles to go with four picks. Howard also led the Big East last year with 28 punt returns for 306 yards.
The assailant is still at large, and UConn students and professors have been notified of the incident via text message and e-mail.
