Women's hockey has an Olympic future, but it may be one that includes a "mercy rule" to keep scores low, The New York Times reports.

International Ice Hockey Federation president Rene Fasel is considering the new rule after double-digit victories by the U.S. and Canada in Vancouver.

"The problem for women's hockey is that you have Canada and the U.S. living on a different planet," Fasel told the Times.

Fasel wants competitive Olympic women's hockey games.

"It's a cultural problem in Europe," Fasel said. "We must concentrate on helping the national federations improve in Europe and in China."

The Swiss-born Fasel knows that change takes time, but he also knows women's hockey can thrive as an Olympic sport.

"It took more than 70 years for us to beat Canada," Fasel said. "It takes time to develop. The women will come, don't worry."
