The Patriots have beefed up their defensive line as they signed 6-foot-2, 301-pound lineman Damione Lewis on Saturday.

The 10-year veteran has spent time in St. Louis (2001-05) and Carolina (2006-09), where he bagged 41 tackles and a half-sack in 16 starts for the Panthers in 2009. The Miami alum has 360 total tackles, 22.5 sacks, 14 passes defensed, five forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries in 131 regular season games (65 starts).

Lewis, who was waived by Carolina on March 4, was the 12th overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft. He had his best season in 2004 with the Rams when he registered 61 total tackles and 5.0 sacks.
