Brett Favre Will Need ‘Two or Three Weeks’ to Be Ready for 2010 Season

Brett Favre has not committed to playing with the Vikings in 2010. Vikings head coach Brad Childress hasn’t set a deadline for his quarterback’s decision either.

But Childress did say how long Favre will need to be prepared to play come Minnesota’s first game on Thursday, Sep. 9.

Childress told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that Favre will need "two or three weeks" before the Vikings’ season opener in New Orleans.

Given that timetable, Favre could return right before the Vikings’ third preseason game on Saturday, Aug. 28, in Minneapolis. If that were the case, Favre would likely see extensive time in that game and forgo the team’s fourth and final preseason game the following Thursday.

Favre has been working out with high school players in Mississippi. In addition to running plays with the team, Favre runs stadium stairs in a weighted vest in humid conditions. The 40-year-old should have no problem getting into game shape, theoretically.

"He knows where he’s at physically," Childress told the Star Tribune. "He’s doing things to put himself in position right now. It’s not like he’s just a lump of clay right now where, ‘OK, I’m going to decide and then I have to get busy.’ Now, do you go through some of the general soreness from scissoring 100 five-step drops? Yeah."

While Favre’s return is in question, Tarvaris Jackson will serve as Minnesota’s interim starting quarterback.
