Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell may be rehabbing his way back to the major leagues, but the team he plays for is still up in the air.
According to ESPN.com, two teams that potentially had interest in the 36-year-old Lowell — the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers — could be thinking otherwise.
The Tigers sent two scouts to Pawtucket last week to watch Lowell rehab, and even though injuries to sluggers Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen leave Detroit looking for a big bat, the report says it’s unlikely the team will go after Lowell now.
The Rangers, meanwhile, appear to be closing in on a deal for Marlins infielder Jorge Cantu. Like Lowell, Cantu is a right-handed power hitter, but he’s only 28 years old and a bit more versatile defensively.
