The old Yankee Stadium may have been The House that George Built, but now the organization is going to unveil an official monument dedicated to their legendary owner, George Steinbrenner, who passed away in July, at the new Yankee Stadium.
The Yanks announced they will unveil the Steinbrenner monument in a special tribute on Sept. 20, before the team hosts the Tampa Bay Rays. The testimonial to the organization's influential leader will be unveiled in Monument Park, an open-air museum inside the new Yankee Stadium on the other side of the center field fence, that honors the Yankees' legends.
Steinbrenner's family has released a statement about the memorial, stating the structure will reflect his appreciation for all Yankee fans.
Though Monument Park has several plaques dedicated to the many historical figures in the organization's past, there are only six monuments in the museum. Steinbrenner's monument will be joining the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle, Miller Huggins and the victims and heroes of Sept. 11.
