Report: Joe Girardi Could Consider Managing Cubs or Cardinals in 2011 If Yankees Don’t Retain Him

One New York manager has already left town, could Joe Girardi be next?

While the Yankees continue their quest for a 28th World Series ring, speculation about their manager’s job status continues to make headlines.

It wouldn’t be the first time a manager left after an inspiring postseason run. As the Chicago Tribune points out, Dusty Baker left San Francisco for the Chicago Cubs immediately after a World Series appearance in 2002 with the Giants.

So where would Girardi end up?

Perhaps that very Chicago team Baker went to, according to the Tribune. While the Cubs are tragically appalling, it is widely speculated that Girardi would consider the change because he is from the Midwest.

Girardi first managed the Florida Marlins but was relieved of his duties despite a moderately successful run which helped him win the National League Manager of the Year award.

The Tribune is reporting that there is a "slight" possibility that he could be headed for a more successful franchise, the St. Louis Cardinals.

A small survey of a dozen Yankees insiders showed that there is a chance Girardi would trade in his current threads for Cardinal red.

"The door's open,'' one polled insider said. "But just a crack."

The Cardinals are currently negotiating with Tony La Russa, who has managed the club for 16 seasons. No deal has been reached for next season and with other options out there, the Cardinals may opt to go in a new direction.

After being cast off by the Marlins, Girardi returned to the Bronx, where he had won three World Series titles behind the plate for the Yankees. He won another last season in his second year as New York’s manager.
