The Carolina Panthers had the last-ranked scoring offense in the NFL this past season. So naturally, they're leaning toward a defensive-minded head coach to fill their vacant head-coaching position.

According to the San Diego Union Tribune, Carolina is expected to name San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera the Panthers' next head coach. The position was opened up when the Panthers recently parted ways with former head coach John Fox.

Rivera was to meet with Panthers owner Jerry Richardson on Monday, and is expected to be announced the team's new head coach on Tuesday.

The 49-year-old Rivera is the mastermind behind a Chargers defense that ranked first in the NFL in yards allowed per game while ranking 10th in points allowed. He's been in charge of the Chargers defense since 2008.
