Derek Jeter Ready to Move On From Tumultuous Offseason As He Nears 3,000 Hits After having the worst season of his career, one in which he had a career-low .270 batting average and .370 slugging percentage, Derek Jeter still received a lucrative three-year, $51 million dollar extension.

That didn’t come easily though, as Jeter’s difficulties also carried into the start of the offseason, as both he and the New York front office struggled mightily to agree on an extension. However, the shortstop has no hard feelings and is ready to move on.

“I’ve addressed this already; I don’t want to keep talking about it,” he said, according to ESPNNewYork. “The way I look at it, it’s over with, it’s done with, I’m happy. This is where I want to be. This is where I want to play. I’ve said that from Day One and I’m ready to move on. It’s over with in my mind.”

Entering his 17th season in pinstripes and ninth season as the team captain, the 36-year-old is more concerned in overcoming his subpar 2010 season.

“I’m coming off a season I wasn’t too happy with but I have to forget about it. You have to come back and make some adjustments and prepare for this season here.”

On a brighter note for the veteran, he sits only 74 hits away from the 3,000-hit milestone, one that only 27 players in baseball history have attained. The last to do so was Craig Biggio in 2007.

Getting to 3,000 hits is a realistic milestone for the shortstop, but to him, it’s just another achievement.

“I’ll try to enjoy it, I guess,” he said. “I don’t take anything for granted and I’m not just assuming it’s going to happen. I’ve always been one to shy away from anything that was personal because I really didn’t like the focus to be on me. But I think it’s something that should be appreciated. I’m talking about myself appreciating the journey and to have fun with it. That’s what I’m going to try to focus on.”

If Jeter reaches 3000 hits, he will be the first player in Yankees history to achieve the feat in a Yankees uniform.
